Vesak is the most sacred Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha. The island transforms with colourful lanterns (vesak kudu), pandols depicting Jataka tales, dansal offering free food and drinks, and temples filled with devotees observing sil.

Families light oil lamps, decorate homes with Buddhist flags, and practise generosity. The five-coloured Buddhist flag symbolises the aura of the Buddha and flies across the nation during Vesak week.
